If you are looking for a New Year's resolution, here's a great one:

Write a paper for MacHack!

Writing a paper is a great way to share knowledge with your peers. Do you work on the bleeding edge? Tell us about it! Have you mastered some obscure programming concept that made your life easier? We want to know! The MacHack community is very receptive to new ideas or in-depth coverage of existing technologies and techniques. The audience is also very technical, so papers that include code samples (or hardware schematics!) are preferred. But if you have non-programming ideas to share, that's okay too. Some really fun papers in previous years have looked at the lighter-side of development.

Past paper topics have included thread concurrency, cross-platform messaging, programmer psychology, AltiVec, object frameworks, plug-in architecture, enterprise development, virtual reality, programming in various languages, scripting, and 3-D vision. This list is not exhaustive.

Papers usually range from 2000 to 4000 words or 8-15 pages in length. Once your abstract is accepted, we will provide you with a document template for formatting your paper. Please do not submit marketing topics or content, they will be rejected. Paper acceptance is at the sole discretion of the papers committee, not all submissions of acceptable topics will be accepted for publication and presentation at the conference. Email the committee for more details.

Paper authors do not pay the conference registration fee (US$525). You must give a brief presentation of your paper during the conference, which enables everyone to realize just how cool your topic really is. Copies of the papers will be included in the printed conference proceedings and on the conference CD.

If you haven't already, start thinking about the paper you would like to write. Send your ideas and abstracts to machack-papers@machack.com. Abstracts are due by January 31, 2002.

We look forward to seeing your paper at MacHack 2002! The conference will take place June 20-22, 2002, in Dearborn, Michigan. More information is available on the Web from http://www.machack.com/.

For attendees, discounted registration is available for early action. Full attendees can register for $425 online (before 02/28/02), a savings of $100 off the regular registration rate. Students can register for $50 which includes access to the entire conference as well as a special meal package. Total attendance is limited to 400. Student attendance is limited to 50. More details are available on the conference website.
